> Preparation - Matthew 4:12 - 5:2
V Standing Issues
V From a word Bishop gave me:
* Make sure people do something with God's message.
V Make it plain:
* Use accessible language.
V Use modern day parables based on every day occurrences:
* Sitting at a stop light
* Driving through a green light
* Approaching a yellow light
* Being cut off in traffic
* Going shopping
* Going to a mall
* Going to school; sitting in class
* Going to work; sitting in your office;
* Keep it simple.
* Use illustrations of truth out of my own experience.
* Impart faith to obey the Word and receive God's promises.
V Introduction
* Welcome to another service at the Hampton Inn & Suites.
V Welcome Cards -
* “I want to call your attention to the Welcome Card that you were given on your way into the auditorium”
V These cards do two things for us:
* They help us get to know our new visitors better.
* They also give anyone (visitors or members) a chance to express a need or to give us feedback.
* By filling it out you will help us to better serve you.
V We're going to provide time for you to complete the cards at the end of our service, but we encourage you to start filling them out now.
* Please use this card:
if you’re a first time visitor or if you’ve never filled one out before,
to tell us about a decision you made today,
to ask us for more information, or to give us feedback.
Please include your contact information unless we already have it. At the end of service we’ll ask you to complete the card and then place it in the designated box or give it to someone from our staff on your way out.

* Read the Passage - Matthew 4:12 - 5:2
When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali — to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles — the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying:
* Exegetical Idea
Jesus launched his ministry by preaching repentance, demonstrating the Kingdom, and training disciples.
* Homiletical Idea:
God wants to teach you personally.
V What does this mean?
* Repent - metanoe÷w - metanoeo Gk. - To change one's mind
* "Follow me" is what Rabbi's say to prospective disciples.
* Teaching, healing, and delivering people are all reflections of God's Kingdom.
* Jesus prioritized training disciples in a ministry context.
V Is it True? Do I believe it?
* Yes - I was trained in a ministry context.
V What difference does it make? So What?
* Jesus' message must be understood in a context of repentance.
* We're going to see that Jesus interpreted the law in a profoundly strict way and made some extraordinary demands on his disciples.
* Homiletical Idea:
God wants to teach you personally.
V Determine the Purpose of the Sermon (what listeners should do)
* Embrace repentance.
* Understand the key to living up to Jesus' teaching.
V Embrace repentance.
* Read excerpts from "Why Does He Do That?"
V Changing your mind means changing your world view
* Church is what you do on Sundays.
* Church is the bride and body of Christ.
*
*
*
*
*
V Understand the key to living up to Jesus' teaching.
* We've just seen from our series on Romans that the law can make us conscious of sin, but can't sanctify us.
* What gives the disciples any hope of being able to live up to Jesus' teaching?
* They were sanctified as they were led by Jesus.
* We are sanctified as we are led by the Holy Spirit -
* They Holy Spirit does for us what Jesus did for his disciples - John 14:1-26
* "They will all be taught by God - Isaiah 54:11-15; John 6:45
* God wants to teach us personally - let's pay attention.
* God: “They have been given my Spirit; teach them to listen to him.”
V Illustrate:
* An elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about.
* A priority other than God that I won't acknowledge.
* Lordship - Not asking God to help you with the puzzle you picked out, but rather asking him to pick out the right puzzle for you.l
*

* Raw Material
V Conclusion
* You have what you need!- 2Peter 1:3-9; 2Cor 1:18-20
* Use what you have!
* Every day we have a chance to become “a man/woman after God’s own heart”.
* Let's prioritize our relationship with God.
*
*
V Altar Call / Welcome Cards / Communion ?
* Welcome Cards - refer to script
* We're almost ready to close this portion of our service, but first we want to give you a chance to respond to what you've heard.
* Earlier in the service we mentioned the welcome cards and we encouraged you to begin filling them out.
V Right now we want you to complete your welcome card. We especially want you to use this card if:
* if you’re a first time visitor
* if you’ve never filled one out before,

V Discussion Questions / Topics:
* Describe a time when you genuinely repented. What made your repentance authentic?
* Describe the way that Jesus called you to follow him.
* Jesus prioritized teaching his disciples. Who are you teaching?
* The disciples prioritized being around Jesus to learn from him. What are you prioritizing?
V Romans 8:12-17
Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
V Discussion Questions / Topics:
* In what ways were you led by the Holy Spirit this past week?
* How will you be led by the Holy Spirit this coming week?
V John 14:15-26
“If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”
Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
V Discussion Questions / Topics:
* Jesus promised the disciples that after he went back to the Father, the Holy Spirit would make his presence real to them. How has the Holy Spirit made Jesus' presence real to you?
* Jesus trained his disciples. In what ways have you been trained? In what ways do you want to be trained?
V Life Group Witnessing Activities
V 1 Peter 3:15-16
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
