Our mission is not to permanently destroy the world’s system. It’s there to provide a “powerful delusion” for those who refuse to believe the truth. Our mission is to continually unravel the world’s system as a witness to the power and authority of God’s Kingdom.

Sanctification affects money (lust of the eyes), sex (lust of the flesh), and power (pride of life).
Minding the things of the Spirit includes: • Maintaining an open life • The flesh is concerned about what other people will think about you.
Sanctification involves the Body of Christ.

Select the Passage - Romans 7:7-25
What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “Do not covet.” But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do — this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God — through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Please use this card: • if you’re a first time visitor or if you’ve never filled one out before, • to tell us about a decision you made today, • to ask us for more information, or to give us feedback. Please include your contact information unless we already have it. Read Introductory Passage - Romans 7:1-6

Do you not know, brothers — for I am speaking to men who know the law — that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

In Christ, God condemned sin in the flesh, enabling us to fully meet the righteous requirements of the law, by living according to the Spirit rather than according to the flesh.

Because we have the Spirit, we can mind the things of the Spirit rather than the things of the flesh.

These cards do two things for us:
They help us get to know our new visitors better.

They also give anyone (visitors or members) a chance to express a need or to give us feedback.
By filling it out you will help us to better serve you.
We're going to provide time for you to complete the cards at the end of our service, but we encourage you to start filling them out now.
Please use this card: • if you’re a first time visitor or if you’ve never filled one out before, • to tell us about a decision you made today, • to ask us for more information, or to give us feedback. Please include your contact information unless we already have it. At the end of service we’ll ask you to complete the card and then place it in the designated box or give it to someone from our staff on your way out.

Read Introductory Passage - Romans 7:7-25

Review Of Romans 7:7-25
The law is NOT sin. The commandment is holy, righteous, and good.
The law makes us conscious of sin.
In my inner man I delight in God's law.
Rom. 7 describes someone who is a slave to God's law in his mind, not someone who has rejected the law.
God is not calling us to reject the law altogether - just to reject trying to be sanctified by it.
Read the Passage - Romans 8:1-17

Exegetical Idea
Through Christ, the Holy Spirit sets us free from bondage to sin and death.
What does this mean?
In Christ, God condemned sin in the flesh, enabling us to fully meet the righteous requirements of the law, by living according to the Spirit rather than according to the flesh.
Because we have the Spirit, we can mind the things of the Spirit rather than the things of the flesh.
This enables us to live according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1-17
Before I understand that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ, I live according to the flesh even though I try to mind the law (not the flesh).
After I understand the revelation of Christ, and that the law can't sanctify me, I should stop trying to be sanctified by the law and turn instead to minding the things of the Spirit. If I choose not to do this, then I am choosing to mind the things of the flesh.
Is it True? Do I believe it?
Yes - it has happened in my life.
Yes - I've seen it happen in other lives.
Yes - The gospel changes lives - 1Corinthians 6:9-11
What difference does it make? So What?
We have clear strategy for living according to the Spirit - minding the things of the Spirit.
Christians (those belonging to Christ) have the Spirit living in them. - Romans 8:9
The Holy Spirit transmits life to us so that by the Spirit we can put to death the misdeeds of the body.
Those who are lead by the Spirit of God are actually his sons.
Our inheritance as sons depends on our sharing in Christ's suffering.
What is the nature of our suffering? - Romans 5:3; Hebrews 2:18
Despite this series, many of us still have the law and rules as our "go to" approach for dealing with sin.
When we're confronted with a problem in the life of another believer, we all to quickly point them to a rules and tell them to shape up.
It would be better for us to develop our relationship with them to the point where we could assess the quality of the time they spend in god's presence.

The ministry of the Spirit:
Before salvation, the Holy Spirit's ministry to us is to lead us to surrender to Jesus.
After salvation, the Holy Spirit's ministry to us is to make us more and more like Jesus.

Galatians 3:1-14

You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing — if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.” The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death — that is, the devil — and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.

All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
