V Give God The Real Thing! (Part 3)
> Raw Material
Give saints a list of helpful passages to meditate on. (This should not be on “autopilot”, but rather so that they can successfully continue their connection with the Father).
> Preparation - 2Corinthians 3
V Standing Issues
V From a word Bishop gave me:
* Make sure people do something with God's message.
V Make it plain:
* Use accessible language.
V Use modern day parables based on every day occurrences:
* Sitting at a stop light
* Driving through a green light
* Approaching a yellow light
* Being cut off in traffic
* Going shopping
* Going to a mall
* Going to school; sitting in class
* Going to work; sitting in your office;
* Keep it simple.
* Use illustrations of truth out of my own experience.
* Impart faith to obey the Word and receive God's promises.
V Introduction
V Welcome Cards -
* “I want to call your attention to the Welcome Card that you were given on your way into the auditorium”
V These cards do two things for us:
* They help us get to know our new visitors better.
* They also give anyone (visitors or members) a chance to express a need or to give us feedback.
* By filling it out you will help us to better serve you.
V We're going to provide time for you to complete the cards at the end of our service, but we encourage you to start filling them out now.
* Please use this card:
if you’re a first time visitor or if you’ve never filled one out before,
to tell us about a decision you made today,
to ask us for more information, or to give us feedback.
Please include your contact information unless we already have it. At the end of service we’ll ask you to complete the card and then place it in the designated box or give it to someone from our staff on your way out.
V Transition
*
* Read the Passage - 2Corinthians 3
Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, like some people, letters of recommendation to you or from you? You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant — not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
* Exegetical Idea:
We are under a new covenant that gives life and whose glory doesn't fade.
* Homiletical Idea: Give God The Real Thing - Take The Mask Off!
V What does this mean?
* God has made us servants of this new Covenant.
V The old covenant:
* is of the "letter"
* brings death
* has a glory that fades
V The new covenant:
* is of "the Spirit"
* brings life
* has a glory that doesn't fade
* The Spirit brings freedom.
V Is it True? Do I believe it?
* Hebrews 8
V What difference does it make? So What?
* Moses exposed his face to God but hid it from the people.
* We expose our faces to God and to one another.
* Unbelievers can't see that the glory of the old covenant is fading.
* Believers go from glory to glory, so they don't have to hide.
* You have to spend time with God to get the glow.
* Some of us need help connecting with God, but we wear a mask so no one will know.
V Formulate the Homiletical Idea:
* Give God The Real Thing - Take The Mask Off!
V Purpose of the Sermon (what listeners should do)
* Understand the meaning of true worship.
* Know the God they're worshipping.
* Worship the God they know! (later in series)
V Know the God you're worshipping.
V Let go of the old covenant:
* Trying to earn God's favor by obeying rules.
* Avoiding God because you're life isn't together yet.
V Embrace the new covenant:
* Coming to God just as you are.
* Trusting God to transform your life.
* Exercise your new covenant rights - spend quality time with God!
*
*
*
*
* Worship the God you know! (later in series)
V Conclusion
* Are you a letter from Christ?
* How much time does God get to write on your heart?
*
*
*

Exodus 34:5-7
Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”
V Discussion Questions / Topics:
* The LORD proclaimed his name and many of his attributes to Moses (e.g. compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, etc.). How do you rely on those attributes when you approach God in prayer?

V Discussion Questions / Topics:
* Being in God's presence changed Moses. Has spending time with God changed you? Discuss.
* What do you think would happen if you spent more time in prayer?
* Moses didn't want people to see that the glory on his face was fading. Can you relate to this? Discuss.
* Many of the Jews of Paul's day were unable to see that the glory of the old covenant had faded. How about you? Are you relating to God in more of an old covenant way or a new covenant way?
* Paul wrote ". . . we are very bold . . .". Are you bold enough to take "the veil" (i.e. the mask) off?
