Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Luke 6:20-26
Looking at his disciples, he (Jesus) said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their fathers treated the prophets. “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

Luke 18:9-14
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men — robbers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

God loves you because you are infinitely valuable.

Conservative mindset:

In reality our value comes from the fact that God loves us.

I phrased it this way because God wants you to remember this the next time you see the word "poor" in these passages.

There is much in the church world that leads us to stick out our spiritual chests.
Receive everything God has for you with an attitude of dependence.
The Beatitudes promise blessing:
Mourners will be comforted.
The meek (e.g. Gentle - Jesus in Mat. 11:29; 21:5 and fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5:23) will inherit the earth.
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.
The merciful will be shown mercy.
The pure in heart will see God.

The peacemakers will be called sons of God.
Those who are persecuted for righteousness receive the Kingdom.
Jesus has good news for the poor - Luke 4:14-27
Right attitude: "Lord - everything I have comes from you!"
Spiritual beggars actually get their needs met.
Preach the real good news to the poor.
God wants to use us to identify and disciple key change agents:
People who are spiritual beggars.
People who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
People who want to make a difference in their own networks.
God wants us to remove every obstacle to their entering the Kingdom.
Some churches don't like the way beggars look, smell, talk, act.
Some churches don't like the way spiritual beggars act:
Spiritual beggars are desperate for real life.
They don't find it in rules - only in a real relationship with God.
the way spiritual beggars act
We must be different.
We can't lead them on a path that we haven't walked on - we have to start as beggars ourselves.
Conclusion
If you start as a beggar you're not a loser!
Beggars have given up on social status.
Don't come to the Kingdom with status or for status.

Expository Preaching
Expository preaching is the communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, and literary study of a passage in its context, which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through the preacher, applies to the hearers.

Analyze the Exegetical Idea
Explain It: What does this mean?
Jesus is speaking to disciples - not mere churchgoers.
He presents to them the attributes he values generally - Mat 5:1-10
He personally affirms their mismatch with the world - Mat 5:11-12
These attributes and this mismatch are central to the purpose of disciples: being salt and light.
The persecution and mismatch that we experience are a direct result of our "saltiness". If we stop being "salty"
Salt doesn't preserve anything unless it gets out of the salt shaker.
A single grain won't work - it takes a collection.

We fail because:

We aren't real disciples (i.e. followers of Jesus) - just religious.
We stay bottled up in the church world.
We try to engage the world by ourselves.
We can succeed by:
Recognizing the difference between discipleship and mere church-going.

Seeing the world as the place where we do God's work.

Jesus' disciples are the earth's preservative and the light by which people see God's glory on earth.
What does this mean?
Jesus is speaking to disciples - not mere churchgoers.
He lists the attributes he values generally - Matthew 5:1-10
He personally affirms their mismatch with the world - Matthew 5:11-12
These attributes and this mismatch are central to the purpose of disciples: being salt and light.
The persecution and mismatch that we experience are a direct result of our "saltiness". If we stop being "salty" we stop being useful.
Salt
Seawater - 3.5% salt.
Used in grain offerings - Leviticus 2:11-13
Elisha uses salt to heal a spring - 2Kings 2:19-22
Newborn children were rubbed with salt - Ezekiel 16:1-6
"salted with fire" - Mark 9:49-50
Salt acts as a preservative.
Salting Food - 20% salt content required to kill most bacteria.

Salt doesn't preserve anything unless it gets out of the salt shaker.
A single grain won't work - it takes a collection.

Light doesn't do any good unless it's where people can see it.

What difference does it make? So What?
The Church doesn't always seem like salt and light to me.
We fail because:
We aren't real disciples (i.e. followers of Jesus) - just religious.
We stay bottled up in the church world.
We try to engage the world by ourselves.
We can succeed by:
Know the difference between discipleship and mere church-going.
Seeing the world as the place where we do God's work.
Making a firm commitment to partnership with other disciples.

Homiletical Idea: Season, sustain, and shine - BIG IDEA!!!
Purpose of the Sermon (what listeners should do)
Be disciples (like the audience for this passage).
Season
Sustain
Shine
Act collectively
Be disciples (like the audience for this passage).
It's about more than going to church.
Do you want to be like Jesus? If so, what are you doing about it?
Whatever stands in the way of you being a disciple is also standing in the way of you being salt and light. You have to do something about it!
Remember the seed that fell among thorns - Matthew 13:22
Season
You can't season anything from within the walls of the church building.
Season compatible foods.

Illustration - Pepper On My Cereal
Several years ago I made my self a bowl of cold cereal. I sprinkled on some sugar substitute and then reached for the cinnamon and finished it off with milk. When I started to eat it I noticed that it had an unusual kick to it.
A few days later I came downstairs to once again make myself a bowl of cereal. I sprinkled on some sugar substitute and, once again, reached for what I thought was the cinnamon. As it turned out, what I grabbed was pepper - I caught my mistake just before I was about to pour pepper on my cereal. It was then that I realized that this must have been what happened the previous time when I ate my cereal with that extra “kick”.
What interests do you have outside of church?
Give God a chance to use you as seasoning among people with whom you have shared interests.
This is the type of setting where you can be most yourself - hence, most natural and relaxed.
Sustain
Food is always "trying" to go bad.
Our environment is full of bacteria - both beneficial and harmful.
In a live person, the immune system fights off harmful bacteria.
When we die, the bacteria in our bodies no longer have any opposition, so they start to digest us.
Many bacteria behave differently depending on whether they are alone or in a group.
Bacterial signaling., quorum sensing
Biofilms, dental plaque
Salt creates an environment that inhibits bacterial growth.
Osmosis
Because of their alienation from God, people are constantly under the negative influence of sinful thoughts and habits.
This can obviously be spiritually fatal.
We are the preservative that keeps the bacteria from taking over.
Shine
You can't shine properly inside the walls of the church building.
You need to get outside!
Expect to be used somewhere where there is opposition.
We salt food to prevent destruction by bacteria that are already there.
Act collectively
Like bacteria, grasshoppers exhibit group behavior.
Grasshoppers respond to overcrowding.
Increased tactile stimulation of the hind legs (several contacts per minute for 4 hours) causes an increase in levels of serotonin.
This causes the grasshopper to change color, eat much more, and breed much more easily. It becomes a locust.
It is estimated that the largest swarms have covered hundreds of square miles and consisted of many billions of locusts.
Stop thinking as individuals and grab a partner.
Conclusion
Be disciples

Matthew 5:11-16
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Luke 18:9-14 (repeated from last week)

“‘Every grain offering you bring to the LORD must be made without yeast, for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in an offering made to the LORD by fire. You may bring them to the LORD as an offering of the firstfruits, but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings.

The men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.” “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” And the water has remained wholesome to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.

The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised. “‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!”

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop — a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear.” The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
