V Standing Issues
V Make it plain
* Use accessible language and modern parables.
* Make sure people do something with God's message.
* Keep it simple.
* Use illustrations of truth out of my own experience.
* Impart faith to obey the Word and receive God's promises.
V Introduction
* The man with the fir tree growing in his lung.
* Some seeds will grow anywhere.
V The Story of the Farmer - Matthew 13:1-23
* How can we be fruitful in God's Kingdom?
V Purpose
* Understand what it takes to be fruitful in God's Kingdom.
* Adopt practices that will make them fruitful.
V What do I need to be fruitful in God's Kingdom?
* You need to understand the message.
* You need to let the message take root in your life.
* You need to make the message your priority.
V Why should I believe this?
* Personal Testimony
* People I've observed over the years
* Conversation with P. after life group.
V What difference does this make?
* The best way for your life to make a difference is by bearing fruit!
* The consequences of failure are serious.
V Understanding the message of the Kingdom
* God exists.
* God loves you and want to have a relationship with you.
* A relationship with God must be on his terms.
* God's terms are: follow Jesus!
V There is only one way to follow Jesus - make what he said and did the focus of your life.
* Start with the first thing Jesus said and obey it.
* Move on to the second thing and obey that too.
* Move to the next thing and do the same.
* When you get to the end start over.
V Letting the message of the Kingdom take root.
V A plant's roots serve two purposes:
* absorbing water and inorganic nutrients
* anchoring the plant to the ground
* Don’t start with your own agenda and then look for a verse in which Jesus appears to align with you. You need to align with Jesus.
V The message of the Kingdom will put down roots if you let it:
* Reading God's Word and obeying it
* Prayer (talking to God and listening to him)
* Worship
* Fellowship with other believers (life groups)
* Holiness
* Service
* Evangelism and Discipleship
V Making the message your priority.
V Take note of the things that get in the way of your growth!
* What's getting in the way of your roots?
* What's getting in the way of your fruit?
V Conclusion

Matthew 13:1-23

Jesus Tells a Story About a Farmer (also known as The Parable of the Sower)
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop — a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear.

Jesus Explains Why He Uses This Kind Of Story
The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
He replied, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

Jesus Explains the Story of the Farmer
“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
* Have you ever heard a sermon or a Bible lesson that you didn't understand? If so, what did you do about it?
* Have you ever run into trouble or persecution as a Christian? How did you handle it? In light of this passage, how did your "roots" hold up?
* Describe some ways that the "worries of this life" and the "deceitfulness of wealth" have interfered with your progress in following Jesus.
* Are you reproducing yourself in God's Kingdom? Discuss.
