V Three Things You Should Know About Jesus
> Preparation - John 2:23 - 3:21
> Preparation - John 11:17-44; 12:1-11
> Preparation - Luke 24
V Standing Issues
V Make it plain
* Use accessible language and modern parables.
* Make sure people do something with God's message.
* Keep it simple.
* Use illustrations of truth out of my own experience.
* Impart faith to obey the Word and receive God's promises.
V Introduction
V Easter Sunday - Resurrection Day!
* We have something important to tell you.
* Emotion is great, but we want you to have more than just an emotional experience.
* No "scooby dust".
* We want you to think.
* We want you to make some decisions.
* Three things you should know about Jesus?
* Introduce Numbers 21:1-9 somehow.
V Jesus Is The Man - John 2:23 - 3:21
* How can we recognize and get involved in what God is doing? By believing in Jesus and walking in the light of his teaching.
V Purpose
* Explain the new birth and promote desire for the experience.
V What is the new birth?
* Being "born again" or "born from above".
* Being "born of the Spirit".
* A life that can't be understood by those who haven't experienced it.
V Citizenship metaphor
* "first birth" = old citizenship
* "born again" = naturalized
* "eternal life" = new citizenship
V Why should I want this experience?
* To see or enter the Kingdom of God we must be born again (or from above) of the Spirit.
* If you're not born again you don't know "what's up"!
* If you're not born again you're not part of God's "program"!
* Jesus is more than just a "good teacher". He came from heaven!
V How can I receive this experience?
* Jesus does not give a direct answer to this question here.
* Jesus explains that he must be "lifted up" so that people can believe in him and receive eternal life just as the Israelites had to look at the bronze serpent.
* Look and live!
* You must receive Jesus the way he presents himself and not as merely a "good teacher".
* Believe in him and walk in the light of his teaching.
* Personal Testimony
V Conclusion
* Eternal life is found in a man - Jesus!
* Jesus is the man!
V Jesus Is Life - John 11:17-44; 12:1-11
* Jesus has the power of life and resurrection.
V Purpose
* Promote a desire to know Jesus as "the resurrection and the life".
V What does it mean that Jesus is "the resurrection and the life"?
* Jesus has authority to raise the dead.
V Why should I want to know Jesus in this way?
* Resurrection made a big difference to Lazarus and his family.
* It means we can trust Jesus with our own lives.
V Warning:
* The Pharisee's plotted to kill Lazarus.
V Following Jesus is dangerous.
* It might get you killed.
* Where are the real men at?
V How can I know Jesus in this way?
* Do what Jesus told Martha and Mary to do: Believe
V Make room for Jesus to work - roll away the stone.
* If you want what's resurrected to come out - roll away the stone.
* Note - Martha wanted Jesus to raise her brother but was concerned about the smell from rolling away the stone.
V Conclusion
* Resurrection comes through a man - Jesus!
* Jesus is life!
V Jesus Is Lord - Luke 24:
* Jesus rose from the dead according to God's plan and is in charge of God's Kingdom.
V Purpose
* Testify to the resurrection.
* Promote a desire to know the resurrected Jesus and to follow him.
V The Resurrection
* The tomb was empty
* The message spread in a hostile environment.
* Most of the witnesses died for their testimony.
V What does it mean to know and follow the resurrected Jesus?
* It means you take his resurrection seriously.
V It means to know him the way you know anyone else you're close to:
* You talk to him.
* He talks to you.
* You care about what he thinks and what he wants.
V You follow him like you follow a parent, teacher, or leader:
* You listen to what he says and obey.
* You make understanding him a priority.
* You join with other people who are also following him.
V Why should I want to know and follow the resurrected Jesus?
V Jesus death, burial, and resurrection was predicted in scripture.
* It wasn't just a tragic accident - Jesus came to die.
* It was God's gracious provision for us.
* Jesus offers us forgiveness - Luke 24:46-47
* Jesus provides escape from condemnation - John 3:16-18
V How can I get started?
* Believe that God raised him from the dead.
* Believe that he really is Lord (i.e. in charge of God's Kingdom).
V Do what his followers in the Bible did - treat him like he is Lord.
* We told you this would require you to think!
* Don't be like Martha - wanting resurrection but afraid of the smell.
* We will help you!
V Conclusion
* Jesus is Lord!
V Conclusion
* Jesus is the man!
* Jesus is life!
* Jesus is Lord!
V What Do I Do About This?
* Will you reject Jesus?
* Will you follow Jesus?
* These are the only two options - you can't "just be friends"!
* Altar Call / Response Cards?
V Discussion Questions / Topics (based on the indicated scriptures)
Numbers 21:1-9
When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. Then Israel made this vow to the LORD: “If you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy their cities.” The LORD listened to Israel’s plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.
They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”
Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.
* Through Moses God directed the Israelites to "look and live". Describe a time when you needed God to do something for you that you couldn't do for yourself. Were you able to just trust God to take care of your need?
John 2:23 - 3:21
Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven — the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”
* Explain in your own words what it means to be born again and what it means to have eternal life.
* Have you been "born again"? If so, tell us how it happened.
* If you have not been "born again", would you like to be?
