V Three Choices Of A Successful Disciple
> Preparation - Mat 7:13-29
V Standing Issues
V Make it plain
* Use accessible language and modern parables.
* Make sure people do something with God's message.
* Keep it simple.
* Use illustrations of truth out of my own experience.
* Impart faith to obey the Word and receive God's promises.
V Introduction
V Palm Sunday - Mat 21:1-11
* One of the most publicly successful moments in Jesus' life.
* Five days later he was crucified.
* Then he rose from the dead, but appeared only to his followers.
* What do we recognize as success?
V How can I be successful as a disciple?
* In our series "The Standard 2009" Jesus is summarizing his teaching.
V Instructions to serious disciples, not casual inquirers
* Mat 5:21 - 7:12 is a parenthetical interlude interpreting the law.
* Mat 7:13-29 continues Mat 5:13-20
* Since you're actively following me, keep these things in mind.
V The Passage
V Jesus' Principles From the Sermon on the Mount
V God is calling us to relationship - he wants to be Daddy to us!
* The relationship is on his terms - he calls the shots!
V Jesus is fulfilling the scriptures - Mat 5:17-20
* Restoring a right understanding of scripture so we can obey it.
* Bringing good news, freedom, recovery, etc. - Luke 4:18-21
* Put his teaching into practice.
* Read the passage - Mat 7:13-29
V Homiletical Idea: Three Choices Of A Successful Disciple
V Exegetical Idea:
V Subject:
* In light of Jesus' teaching about the Kingdom, how can I be successful as a disciple?
V Complement:
* Enter through the narrow gate and follow the narrow path.
* Watch out for hypocrites.
* Be obedient by diligently putting Jesus' words into practice.
V The First Choice - Narrow Gate
V Reread the first section - Mat 7:13-14
* Related Passages: Luke 13:22-30
V Explain It: What does this mean?
* Have you ever had trouble looking for a side street on your way to somewhere you've never been before? Finding it requires your full attention (e.g. driving to visit Dana and Thomas in Virginia).
* Narrow and broad roads defined by examples in Mat 5:21 - 7:12
V Jesus is dealing with people on paths
V He is contrasting two types of people in particular:
* His disciples (following the path he has laid out for them)
* The Pharisees and teachers of the law
V Think about two types of people trying to get to New York:
* The Fung Wah bus vs. Greyhound or Amtrack
* People who aren't going to New York are not in view here.
V Broad Road
* Path of the Pharisees and teachers of the law
* Obeying the law to put God in your debt.
* "Good deeds" performed for public show.
* Accumulating material wealth as a sign of God's favor.
V Narrow Road
* Exceeds righteousness of Pharisees and teachers of the law
V Focused on relationship with God by following Jesus.
* God wants to know us. He made us to appreciate him.
* Obeying the law for God's sake.
* "Good deeds" performed to glorify God.
* Being generous and relying on God's provision.
V Prove It: Is it True? Do I believe it?
* A relationship with God must be on his terms.
* God calls the shots
V Jesus is the only way - John 14:1-6; Acts 4:8-12
V You demonstrate faith in a
* cook: by eating the food he prepares.
* surgeon: by letting him/her operate on you or a loved one.
* leader: by following him/her.
* Continue the way you started - Col 2:6-7
* Choice 1: Choose the narrow road over the broad road.
V The Second Choice - Watch Out
* Reread the second section - Mat 7:15-23
V Explain It: What does this mean?
* Two kinds of hypocrites: false prophets, religious people
V False Prophets
V False prophets are false leaders
* Sheep's clothing refers to what shepherds wear.
* The term "prophet" indicates that Jesus is describing someone who would appear to be a legitimate leader.
* We are commanded to watch out for false prophets - they exist and we will encounter them.
* We can't wait until they reveal themselves to inspect their fruit. We must inspect fruit as part of our general lifestyle.
V Religious People - Hypocrites
* Pleasing the Father takes more than just calling Jesus "Lord".
* Signs and wonders do not prove that you know Jesus.
* Only doing the Father's will and knowing Jesus count with him.
V Prove It: Is it True? Do I believe it?
V Yes - Share experiences:
* Personal experience with A.C.C. and leader's fruit.
* Jim Jones & People's Temple
* Other cults
* Yes - look at the sometimes spectacular failures of some popular nationally known ministries.
* I'm no longer impressed by public performance.
* The gifted who have failed need to open up about their failures.
* Choice 2: Watch out for false prophets and hypocrites.
V The Third Choice - Practice
V Reread the third section - Mat 7:24-27
* Related Passages: Luke 6:46-49
V Explain It: What does this mean?
* The only way to ultimately enter God's Kingdom is to consistently practice what Jesus says.
V Discipleship is like building a house.
* It's a long-term project.
* It requires an appropriate foundation.
* Difficulties are inevitable but their timing is not predictable.
* Building on the right foundation guarantees future success.
V Prove It: Is it True? Do I believe it?
V Consider those who attend church regularly yet are unable to handle life's difficulties:
* Easy prey for Muslims and others.
* Blown away by tragedy - "How could God let this happen?"
* Undone when life doesn't go their way.
* Choice 3: Faithfully put Jesus' words into practice.
V Revisit The Question: How can I be successful as a disciple?
* Choose the narrow road over the broad road.
* Watch out for false prophets and hypocrites.
* Faithfully put Jesus' words into practice.
V How Do I Do This?
V Choose the narrow road over the broad road
V Recognize:
* Many in church fail by ignoring what Jesus actually said.
* Some "do church" to gain public affirmation and self-esteem.
* Churches naturally draw hypocrites. If we don't actively promote the "narrow path" we will be overrun with "broad path" people and we will fail in our mission.
* The "broad path" kills people. - Mat 23:1-39
V Take Action:
* Get to know God intimately as your Father - pray!
* Prioritize your relationship with him.
* Pursue discipleship as a way to get to know God better.
* Ask God to help you love him better.
V Watch out for false prophets and hypocrites
V Recognize:
V Predators like vulnerable prey. False prophets are no different.
* People who are pursuing Jesus are attractive targets.
V Failing to recognize false prophets has consequences:
* It makes you vulnerable to their harmful agendas.
* It leaves the rest of the church vulnerable as well.
V We have to change the way we evaluate:
* Focus less on words and more on actions
* Focus less on the short term and more on the long term
V How is it done in the world?
* Credit reports
* Job references
* Check first - then trust!
* Unbelievers are shrewder than the saints - Luke 16:1-15
V What are the warning signs of a false prophet?
* Bad fruit
* Hiding fruit
* Hiding his/her past
* Lying
* Not accountable to anyone
V It takes more than failure to make a false prophet
* We all fail - James 3:1-2; 1John 1:5-10
* Some become false prophets by refusing to repent
* Some become false prophets by trying to restore themselves
* We need to help each other - Gal 6:1-2; James 5:13-20
* "Lead Us Not Into Temptation" by Don Basham p. 67
V Take Action:
* Maintain a lifestyle of openness and expecting the same from your leaders and your other brothers and sisters.
V Structure and operate in a way that facilitates checking fruit
* Check references before authorizing ministry
* Present references before seeking to minister
* We must assess both existing and future fruit - 1Tim 5:24-25
V Faithfully put Jesus' words into practice.
V Mat 7:21-23 depicts the ultimate graduation.
V My MIT Graduation
* Final assembly
* Names called for last minute fees, library books, etc.
* Checkers every dozen yards or so.
* Most received diplomas.
* Some received diploma frames with explanatory notes
V How will you do at graduation?
* How you do then is determined by what you do now!
* Some things that we thought would count won't!
* Some things we thought wouldn't count will!
* Graduating takes more than wearing school clothing.
* Being a star athlete or working for the school newspaper are not proof that you understand your field of study.
* Only completing your degree requirements counts.
* The only way to graduate is to do your homework.
V Mat 7:24-27 is about your lifestyle
* The house standing or falling reflects graduating or not graduating.
* Standing through the storm (i.e. graduating) requires obedience.
* A building's foundations are not random and neither is obedience.
V Analogies for Mat 7:21-23 vs. Mat 7:24-27
* Graduation vs. homework
V Recognize:
* Practicing Jesus' words means more than just going to church.
V Church helps you discover where the rock is, but it doesn't sink the foundations for you.
* "No my brother - you have to buy your own!"
* Describe sinking of pilings.
V Pilings must underlie the entire structure being constructed.
* You must examine your entire life to ensure that every facet has its foundation on rock.
* You can't do this by yourself - you need a team!
V This is a lifestyle issue.
* Discover something in the Word that we aren't yet practicing.
* Develop a plan for obedience.
* Start practicing the Word in this area.
* Rinse - repeat
* You can't do this on your own.
V You need to be part of a practicing community - a life group.
V American culture is individualistic
* "I'll do it myself!"
* "I did it my way!"
V Immaturity
* Pursues spiritual growth individualistically
V Focuses on things that don't require a team
* accumulating spiritual information
* emulating church behavior
V Maturity
* Pursues spiritual growth as part of a team
* Focuses on developing a spiritual lifestyle
V Sees a team as essential to doing God's will
* Will find a team or build one.
* Pays attention to character more than to gifts.
V Teams play to win
* Much of the behavior we settle for should be our preparation.
* You have to do more than practice.
* You have to do more than drills.
* You have to do more than exhibition games.
* You have to take a risk and play a game and make mistakes.
V Take Action:
* Develop and implement a plan.
V Planning for a lifestyle of obedience
* We sow a thought and reap an act;
We sow an act and reap a habit;
We sow a habit and reap a character;
We sow a character and reap a destiny.

V Conclusion - Mat 7:28-29
* Jesus will grade the papers and hand out the diplomas!
V How will you do at graduation?
* How you do then is determined by what you do now!
* Some things that we thought would count won't!
* Some things we thought wouldn't count will!
* Doing God's will takes more than simply calling Jesus "Lord"!
* Signs and wonders are not proof of a relationship with Jesus.
* Only doing the Father's will and knowing Jesus count with him.
* The only way to ultimately enter God's Kingdom is to consistently practice what Jesus says.
V God has a big Kingdom - You should have a big goal:
* More than scoring points
* More than winning a single game
* More than winning a division title
* More than winning the national championship
* Set your sights on the hall of fame as part of the greatest team in history!

V Discussion Questions / Topics (based on the indicated scriptures)
Matthew 7:13-14
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
* The narrow road is one on which you make your relationship with God your priority. How are you doing in this area? What have you and God been talking about and what has he been saying to you?
Matthew 7:15-23
* How do you evaluate the fruit of people who present themselves to you as leaders? How open are you to allowing people to evaluate your fruit?
* Jesus talks about people who call him Lord yet don't obey him. Have you met any people like that? How are you doing in this area?
Matthew 7:24-29
* How frequently do you read the Bible? Do you understand what you read? Discuss how you put it into practice. How can we help you with this?
V Witnessing Activities
* Consider the Life Church Mission:
Our mission is to develop mature followers of Jesus Christ who love God with everything they've got, genuinely love their neighbors, and take the lead in expanding God's Kingdom in the world around them.
* As we mentioned on Sunday, Life Church will begin going out into neighborhoods to invite people to our 4/12/2009 Easter service. Our Life Groups will play a key role in this effort. Please make plans with your group to go out at least three times between now and Easter Sunday to invite people.  You can do this outreach either during your life group time, or at some other time that you and your group choose.
