V New Material
> Preparation
> Preparation - Mat 6:1-18
V For God Or For Show - Mat 6:1-18
> Preparation
V Standing Issues
V Make it plain
* Use accessible language and modern parables.
* Make sure people do something with God's message.
* Keep it simple.
* Use illustrations of truth out of my own experience.
* Impart faith to obey the Word and receive God's promises.
V The Problem
* Stepping Stones?
* Outsiders think we're just putting on a show.
V They expect contact with us to be painful rather than helpful.
* The Ozzie Davis character in "Jungle Fever".
* The Pharisee and the Tax Collector - Luke 18:9-14
V The Passage
V Jesus' Principles From the Sermon on the Mount
V God is calling us to relationship - he wants to be Daddy to us!
* The relationship is on his terms - he calls the shots!
V Jesus is fulfilling the scriptures - Mat 5:17-20
* Restoring a right understanding of scripture so we can obey it.
* Bringing good news, freedom, recovery, etc. - Luke 4:18-21
* Put his teaching into practice.
* Read the passage - Mat 6:1-18
V What does this mean?
V The "big three" of Jewish piety:
* Charity, Prayer, Fasting
* Their spiritual importance causes them to be promoted by leaders.
* Their promotion by leaders causes people to use them for status.
* We like the approval of others and sometimes we try to obtain it under false pretenses. - we "fake the funk".
* Seeking approval from others nullifies any reward might get from God.
V What about letting our light shine? - Mat 5:13-16
* Our goal should be praise for the Father - not praise for us.
V Do I believe it?
* Charity as a form of public relations
* Religious praying in church
* Religious fasting in church
* Typical Easter behavior - clothes, etc.
* Gospel music - Everybody wants to look spiritual so that they can tap into the money from the gospel audience.
* I've been there myself.
V What difference does it make?
V Our relationship with God is at stake
* "I never knew you. Away from me you evildoers!" -Mat 7:21-23
* The penalty is severe: Hell
* Our character is at stake (salt and light) - Mat 5:13-16
* If you want it to count with God do it right - our hypocrisy is showing.
* For God or for show - power dynamics of evangelistic outreach á la “A Credible Witness”
* You can spend your time trying to make people think you're "all that" or you can spend your time trying to make a difference for the Kingdom.
* We like to spend time with people who are impressed by us or who most easily make us feel accepted. These are not necessarily the people who will enable us to experience the greatest growth.
* It makes us like the Pharisees (Jesus called them fools) - Mat 23:1-39
V Know the difference between seeking God's approval and man's
V We always play to some audience:
* Pleasing your parents vs. pleasing your friends.
* Pleasing your teacher vs. pleasing your classmates.
* Pleasing your boss vs. pleasing your coworkers.
* Politicians seem to constantly play to an audience.
V Picture yourself on stage.
* Who's in the audience - God, people, or both?
* When you read your lines who are you facing?
V Recognizing when you're seeking man's approval rather than God's
V Who's going to get the glory?
* When you're seeking God's approval he gets the glory.
* When you're seeking man's approval you get the glory.
V In Giving
* The purpose of giving is to love the recipient, not to create a fan club.
* Do you gain status because of your giving? - James 2:1-13
V In Prayer
* Prayer is for relating to God, not impressing an audience.
* Do people who hear you pray say: "Don't call on me to pray because I could never pray like that!"
V In Fasting
* Fasting is for focusing on God, not impressing others.
* Do you somehow find yourself discussing the fact that you're fasting?
V Other Issues
* Do you seek places of honor when being seated?
* Are you eager for a title?
V Learning to seek God's approval rather than man's
V Jesus wants us to win and his teaching pattern reveals the key:
* Internal alignment with God's objectives (e.g. be humble)
* Practical steps (e.g. do potentially "self-glorifying" things in private)
* Be willing to serve others in obscurity.
V Talk to God. Develop your relationship with him.
* The closer you get to God the less you'll want to impress others.
* One "attaboy" from God beats several "attaboys" from anyone else.
* You have to be close to God to hear the "attaboy".
* Give in secret.
* Pray in a simple way so people who hear you will say: "I can do that!".
* Fast privately.
* Allow followers of Jesus to speak into your life (small groups).
V Altar Call / Response Cards?
* Are you desperate for someone to be proud of you?
* Are you hungry for some sort of approval?
* Let God in!
* Sin requires a reset from the creator like "supervisor to aisle 3".
V We must absorb the "spiritual DNA" that nullifies sin. That "DNA" must come from the death of a god-man (i.e. Jesus).
* Eat the sacrifice (research this).
* Eat my flesh and drink my blood.
* Take eat.
V Discussion Questions / Topics (based on the indicated scriptures)
V Matthew 6:1-4
“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
* What do people do to seem "spiritual" or "holy" to others?
* What have you done to seem "spiritual" or "holy" to others?
* How does this passage apply to the way you give to others?
V Matthew 6:5-15
“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
* How does this passage apply to your prayer life?
V Matthew 6:16-18
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
* Discuss your experience with fasting and how this passage affects you.
V Witnessing Activities
* Consider the Life Church Mission:
Our mission is to develop mature followers of Jesus Christ who love God with everything they've got, genuinely love their neighbors, and take the lead in expanding God's Kingdom in the world around them.
* As we mentioned on Sunday, Life Church will begin going out into neighborhoods to invite people to our 4/12/2009 Easter service. Our Life Groups will play a key role in this effort. Please make plans with your group to go out at least three times between now and Easter Sunday to invite people.  You can do this outreach either during your life group time, or at some other time that you and your group choose.
V Scriptures For 03/15/2009 Life Church Sermon: For God Or For Show?
Luke 18:9-14
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men — robbers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Matthew 6:1-4
“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:5-15

I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
Matthew 6:16-18
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 5:13-16
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 23:1-39
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
“Everything they do is done for men to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted in the marketplaces and to have men call them ‘Rabbi.’
“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ. The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.
“Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices — mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law — justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our forefathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of the sin of your forefathers!
“You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”
