> Standing Issues
V The Problem
V You can't trust anyone!
* "The check is in the mail."
* "See, what had happened was . . ."
V The Passage
V Jesus' Principles From the Sermon on the Mount
V God is calling us to relationship - he wants to be Daddy to us!
* The relationship is on his terms - he calls the shots!
* We have to treat our brothers and sisters right.
* You're on a mission for your Father - Mat 5:16
V Jesus is fulfilling the scriptures - Mat 5:17-20
* Restoring a right understanding of scripture so we can obey it.
* Bringing good news, freedom, recovery, etc. - Luke 4:18-21
* Do to others what you would have them do to you.
* Put his teaching into practice.
* Read the passage - Mat 5:33-37; James 5:12
V What does this mean?
* O.T. Reference - Num 30:1-2
V Examples
* Jesus' rebuke to the Pharisees - Mat 23:16-22
* "I swear to God"
* Don't swear falsely - Lev 19:11-12
V Why do we swear and take oaths?
* We want people to believe us but we lack credibility.
* Our track record isn't strong enough to back up our words.
* We use God to bolster our image.
* "Yes" and "No" is the space we should live in - say what you mean!
* "what is warranted by what I do or say" - 2Cor 12:6
* Bottom Line - Seeking credibility beyond our track record is demonic.
V Do I believe it?
* I've been there!
* Examples of credibility issues: lateness
V What difference does it make?
V Our relationship with God is at stake
* "I never knew you. Away from me you evildoers!" -Mat 7:21-23
* The penalty is severe: Hell
V Our character is at stake!
* Salt and light - Mat 5:13-16
* God wants us to grow character - Mat 7:24-27
V Jesus wants us to win and his teaching pattern reveals the key:
* Internal alignment with God's objectives (e.g. be simply honest)
* Practical steps (e.g. no obscuring or embellishing your track record)
V When we resort to oaths we are:
* acknowledging that our track record is inadequate,
* acknowledging that we need something to bolster our credibility,
* diminishing our ability to represent the Father and his Kingdom.
V Faithfulness is one of the fruit of the Spirit - Gal 5:22-23
* There are 9 distinct fruit - they are not interchangeable: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
V Some things are distinct
* Milk and cookies are distinct, but go well together.
* Democracy and freedom are distinct, but go well together.
* Love is distinct from faithfulness
* Kindness is distinct from faithfulness
* Goodness is distinct from faithfulness
* When we try to enhance our credibility beyond our track record we are letting the enemy use us. When we let the enemy use us in one area, we endanger other areas of our lives - Rom 6:15-18
V We must cultivate a lifestyle of credibility!
* Our lifestyle should be oriented around the truth.
* Own your track record - be honest about it.
* Don't think about yourself more highly than you ought to - Rom 12:3
* Don't use "God" language to distract others from your track record.
V Planning, honesty, "good luck", and "bad luck"
* "The more I practice, the luckier I get" - Gary Player, etc.
* "No" is a success word, but you can't say no to everything.
* What are your chances - 90%, 99%, 99.9%, 99.99% ?
V What's your track record on Jesus?
* Yes, yes, or no, no?
* Victory, or "I swear to God I won't do that again"?
* You need to hang out with believers who are also trying follow Jesus.
V God's Tools For Victory and How To Use Them
* Simple speech.
* Go "cold turkey" on swearing!
* Just say "yes" or "no".
V Kiss Revenge Goodbye - Mat 5:38-42
> Standing Issues
V The Problem
* Hatfields and McCoys

V Old Testament References
* Instruction For Judges - Ex 21:18-25; Lev 24:17-22; Dt 19:15-21
V Is "eye for eye" a recommendation or a limit?

* What if people see me as weak?
V This passage separates the men from boys, women from girls.
* Do you have a real relationship with God or just a "rule book"?
* Those with a real relationship are secure even in mistreatment.
* Those with only a "rule book" will have a hard time with this passage.
V Revenge diminishes you personally.
* The woman who honked at me when the light turned green.

V Discussion Questions / Topics (based on the indicated scriptures)
V Scripture Reference - Matthew 5:33-37
“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
* Do you ever use special promises or oaths to enhance your credibility? If so, why is your "yes" or "no" not enough?
V Scripture Reference - Matthew 5:38-42
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
* Have you faced a situation recently in which you were tempted to retaliate against someone? If so, how did you handle it?
V Scripture Reference - Matthew 5:43-48
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
* Are there people in your life that you find difficult to love? Discuss.
V Witnessing Activities
* Consider the Life Church Mission:
Our mission is to develop mature followers of Jesus Christ who love God with everything they've got, genuinely love their neighbors, and take the lead in expanding God's Kingdom in the world around them.
* As we mentioned on Sunday, Life Church will begin going out into neighborhoods to invite people to our 4/12/2009 Easter service. Our Life Groups will play a key role in this effort. Please make plans with your group to go out at least three times between now and Easter Sunday to knock on doors or talk to people on the street.  You can do this outreach either during your life group time, or at some other time that you and your group choose.
