* Notes
V Introduction
* Bible Reading 2/8 - 2/14: Ex 28 - 38; Mat 25:31 - 28:20; Psalm 31:9 - 34:22; Prov 8:12 - 9:10

V New Material
> Preparation
> Preparation - Mat 5:17-20
V Fulfilling the Scriptures
* Prep congregation for unchurched
V Israel was badly in need of reform
* 2003 MTV Video Music Awards 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Don Juan, and Christ Rock
* Movements create conditions that require renewal.
* The Kingdom Of God is the ultimate kingdom. It can deal with the need for renewal in ways that other kingdoms can't.
* Review of Beatitudes
V Jesus came to fulfill the scriptures, not to abolish them.
* Fulfill (plerow Gk.), (i.e. fill up) - examples: Luke 4:14-21
* God's Word: Common Law, case law
* Jesus brings out the full meaning of God's Word so that we can successfully obey it.
* Don't get it twisted. Just because I don't promote the traditions of the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law doesn't mean I'm against the Law! I'm teaching you the real Law - the "chronic" - "uncut funk", "the bomb" - 24K!
* Don't think that because Life Church doesn't use the "King James", and we don't maintain a lot of church traditions that God has nothing to say about the details of your life. He does!
V Jesus is giving his authoritative interpretation because he wants us to enter the Kingdom.
V Modern examples of techniques designed to achieve a standard:
* New York City Regents exam
* Massachusetts MCAS exam
* Drill sergeants: "I'm hard on you in order to save your life"
* Jesus is presenting scripture in a way that will enable us to obey it.
V Discussion Questions / Topics (based on the indicated scriptures)
V Scripture Reference - Mat 5:17-20
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 5:17-20
* Discuss Jesus' attitude towards the Old Testament as revealed in this passage. How does this affect your view of the Old Testament?
* Is the Old Testament helpful to you? Is it confusing? Discuss.
* Based on this passage how might you be least or great in the Kingdom?
* Jesus wants his disciples' righteousness to surpass that of the Pharisees so that they will enter the kingdom of heaven. He wants them to succeed! Have you viewed Jesus' teaching as designed for your success before? Does this make a difference in the way you read the gospels?
V Witnessing Activities
* Consider the Life Church Mission:
Our mission is to develop mature followers of Jesus Christ who love God with everything they've got, genuinely love their neighbors, and take the lead in expanding God's Kingdom in the world around them.
V Please discuss as a group some of the ways we can help equip you to carry out this mission and make a list that your life group leaders can bring back to the pastoral team.
* What aspects of reaching out to the unchurched are you most excited about? What aspects are most challenging to you?
* How confident are you about helping someone else to follow Jesus?
* How confident are you about following up or discipling a new Christian?
* How comfortable are you about inviting people you know casually to visit Life Church? How comfortable are you about inviting people you know well? Discuss.
* What Bible passages or issues would you like to understand better?
