Repentance
The wrong way - Nick Leeson: "I'm sorry".
From 1992, Leeson made unauthorized speculative trades that at first made large profits for his employer, £10 million which accounted for 10% of Barings' annual income. He earned a bonus of £130,000 on his salary of £50,000.
Luck went sour, used a Barings error account to hide his losses.
Barings Management also allowed Leeson to remain Chief Trader while being responsible for settling his trades, jobs that are usually done by two different people. This made it much simpler for him to hide his losses from his superiors.
By the end of 1992, the account's losses exceeded £2 million.
By the end of 1994 the losses had ballooned to £208 million.
On January 16, 1995 Leeson placed a short straddle (an options trading strategy) in the Singapore and Tokyo stock exchanges, essentially betting that the Japanese stock market would not move significantly overnight.
January 17, 1995 - the Kobe earthquake hit early in the morning on January 17, sending Asian markets, and Leeson's investments, into a tailspin.
Leeson attempted to recoup his losses by making a series of increasingly risky new investments, this time betting that the Nikkei Stock Average would make a rapid recovery - it didn't.
February 23, 1995 - Realizing the gravity of the situation, Leeson left a note reading "I'm Sorry" and fled. Losses eventually reached £827 million (US$1.4 billion), twice the bank's available trading capital.
February 26, 1995 - After a failed bailout attempt, Barings was declared insolvent.
March 2, 1995 - Leeson was arrested and extradited back to Singapore after fleeing to Malaysia, Thailand and finally Germany,
Sentenced to six and a half years in Changi Prison in Singapore.
1996 - published autobiography, "Rogue Trader" while in prison.
1999 - released from prison, having been diagnosed with colon cancer, which he has survived despite grim forecasts at the time.
1999 - the book was made into a film of the same name starring Ewan McGregor and Anna Friel.

The wrong way - Nick Leeson: "I'm sorry".

The Dedication Of The Ancients - Heb 11:1-10; Heb 11:32-40
We exercise faith in things we can't see
You expect to get a paycheck after you've worked for someone.
You expect to be able to withdraw money from you bank account.
God rewards earnest seekers.
The world wasn't worthy of the ancients who walked by faith. Can this be said of us too?
Jesus' High Priestly Prayer - John 17
Jesus prayed for his apostles to be one.
Jesus prayed for all the rest of his followers to be one.
We have to pursue unity in practical ways.

Maintain the unity of the Spirit.

Peace is the glue
Jesus gave gifts to the church to unite us with him.
Leaders are coaches.
The congregation does the ministry.
Our unity is not just mystical it's practical.
Our unity is illustrated in the bread and juice of communion.

Many grapes form one cup.

Exegetical Idea
What are the consequences when a man divorces his wife? If the divorce was for anything other than sexual sin, he causes her and anyone she marries to commit adultery!
Developmental Questions
Explain It: What does this mean?
God's original intention should be our guide - Mat 19:4-6
Context - the "certificate of divorce" is a reference to Deut 24:1-4
This passage regulates without advocating (e.g. Deut 22:18; Deut 23:18)
Prove It: Is it True? Do I believe it?
God expresses a similar sentiment in Mal 2:13-16
Apply It: What difference does it make? So What?
Husbands must take the lead in protecting their marriages.
Men must protect women rather than exploit them.
Homiletical Idea
Take your marriage covenant seriously - God does!
Protecting Your Marriage
If either spouse is unhappy, your marriage needs work.
Husbands - take the lead in getting help for your marriage.
You don't have to talk about your feelings the way women do!
Women sometimes want men to be like them.
In Scripture Jesus reveals his emotions but doesn't talk about them.
Anger - Mat 23:136
Sorrow - Mat 23:37-39; Mat 26:36-46
Feel free to express your feelings through action.
Explain your feelings as they become clear to you.
Protecting Women
A man exploits a woman by relating to her in a way that meets his needs without meeting her needs.
Meeting his needs
Sex - using her to gratify your sexual desires
Lauryn Hill - "That Thing"
Friendship - using her to listen to your problems

Honesty, Trustworthiness, Commitment
If you don't have solid relationships with people of your own gender it is extremely risky for you to engage in deep friendships with someone of the opposite gender.
Women are often at risk in their friendships with men.
Be very careful in your relationships with the opposite sex.

What are you doing right now to strengthen your marriage?
What would you like to understand better about marriage success?
Do you want to get married? Why or why not?
Describe your relationship with the person you are considering marrying. If you marry, what will you do to avoid divorce?
Are there issues in your personal life that make marriage an unlikely prospect for you? If so, have you discussed this with anyone?
Have you renounced marriage for the sake of God's Kingdom? If so, how did you come to this decision?

What is God saying to you right now about this subject?
