V Hindrances to a relationship with God
V Not taking the concept of a relationship with God seriously.
V How do I know you have a relationship with someone?
* You spend time with them.
* You talk about them.
* You prioritize them.

* Confusing God with his Church
V How do I know you have a relationship with God?
* You spend time with him.

V How do I know you have a relationship with the Church?
* You spend time at church.

* You act religious.
V Relating to the Church is not the same as relating to God
* Scheduling events with a husband vs. with a wife
* Some people embrace church for acceptance yet avoid God.
* Not understanding God's loving nature - Mat 7:7-11
V Allowing your view of your parents to limit your view of God.
V If you think God is going to disapprove of you, you'll have a hard time developing a relationship with him.

* Were there people who didn't want to spend time with you?

V Welcome to the party - why are you here?
* to enjoy relating to the host?
* to watch the host and gossip about him later?

* "How can I be down?"
* They're not phased by the cool/uncool Christians you meet.
* They're not phased by the slick/wack worship service.
* They're not phased by prosperity/poverty.
* They're all about Jesus!
V Others reject this relationship.
* Some refuse it.
* Some use obedience to rules as a way of avoiding it. - John 5:39
* Some use good works as a way of avoiding it.
* "I never knew you"! - Mat 7:21-23; Mat 25:1-13; Luke 13:22-30
V Some abandon it.
* If your hand offends you - Luke 9:43-48
* Disqualified - 1Cor 9 (ref. Luke 12:48)
* Impossible for the enlightened to return - Heb 6:1-20
V Can you lose your salvation?
* Can you divorce your husband/wife?
* Can you abandon your children?
* Can you turn your back on your parents?

V Your relationship with God must be on his terms!
* God establishes the requirements and the benefits
* Accept God's complete authority over our relationship with him.
V Reconciliation With God - 2Cor 5:1 - 6:2
V 2Cor 5:1-4 - If our earthly tent is destroyed
* God has prepared a heavenly body for us
* We long to have that body

* For our mortality to be swallowed up by life
* The Holy Spirit is our deposit

* The deposit gives us confidence that death brings us to God
V Here on earth we walk by faith
V Faith must be understood in its original biblical context
V Definition
* Faith is not necessarily mystical
* Faith is persuasion
V Mustard seed faith - Mat 17:14-20; Luke 17:1-6
* It develops through experience.
* Use what you've got to get more!
* Faith is an ocean cruise - not a supersonic jet ride.
V The parent/child relationship provides a context for the experience
* Children expect their parents to feed, clothe, and house them.
* You have to walk with God as your Father to develop your faith.
V Faith Recipe
* Talk to God.
V Find out what he wants you to do next.
* Anything God wants you to do will stretch you.
* You will need resources that you don't seem to have.
* Just Do it.
* Use the confidence you gain for the next task God gives you.
* We want to please God
* We know that we will eventually be judged by God
V 2Cor 5:11-13 - We try to persuade men
* We'll make it through the judgement but what about you?
* We want you to understand us and so accept the good news.

V Don't live for yourself!
V Let go of our self-love (narcissism)

* "The Office", "Seinfeld", "Friends", "Frasier", "I Love Lucy", "Home Improvement"
* In God's eyes, we look like some of these narcissists.
* God considers this to be tragedy rather than comedy
* The wedding planner who is focused on her own preferences
* The gift-giver who really has himself/herself in mind
* The man who buys his wife a set of power tools
V Life is a complex system pervaded by unintended consequences. Only God can guide us through them properly.
* Our sinful independence encourages more independence.
* This is true even when we're at our best
* Doing your own thing is death.
V Live for Jesus!
V Pleasing God becomes more important than pleasing ourselves

* Jesus changes everything; you must be born again - John 3
V 2Cor 5:18 - 6:2 - The ministry of reconciliation
* God has reconciled us and sent us to "spread it around"
V God is not counting men's sins against them

* Don't receive his grace in vain by living for yourself!

* Read God's Word with the intention of understanding it and practicing it.

* Prayer is not wishing - it's must be based in God's Word.
* Pray - Father I want to lead others to spiritual maturity.
* Experience God through fellowship with his children
* Join the "family business" - expand the Kingdom

* Don't try to use other good behaviors as substitutes for outreach.
V Keep taking baby steps until you can take bigger steps.

* Navy SEALS have to overcome fear of tied hands and feet.

V Let your relationship with God grow as you actively commune with him in new situations.
* Spiritual growth is not about how "spiritually pretty" you can become.
* Spiritual growth is about increasing your capacity to do God's will.

V Works Activities For This Week's Life Group Meetings (repeated from last week)
V Review the current prayer partnerships in your life group.
* Make sure that everyone has someone to pray with on a weekly basis.
* These can be long-term assignments or your can rotate them.
* If you rotate them, the assignments should last at least one month.
V Review the list of people you are praying for in your life group.
* Make sure that everyone knows who to pray for and how to pray for them.
* Make sure that the people who need salvation are getting prayed for every day by the members of the group.
V Review each person on the list of people you are reaching out to.
